The first vertebroplasty
procedure was successfully performed in 1984 in France by French radiologist Dr. Deramond and his colleagues for the treatment of a painful cervical vertebral lesion (hemangioma) in the spine of a young female patient. Since the mid-1980s in France and the mid-1990s in the United States,
vertebroplasty has been performed to treat the intense pain caused by
vertebral compression fractures that are non-responsive to
conventional therapy.
