Selective arterial embolization including UAE has been performed for 20 years or more. The only new aspect of this procedure is that it is now being routinely used in the management of fibroids rather than being reserved for emergency hemorrhage. This change has occurred because the last 20 years of experience has documented its safety and effectiveness.
In recent years UAE has been documented to stop growth and promote shrinkage of fibroids in addition to controlling hemorrhage.
