In addition to the local anesthetic given at the puncture site, you will also receive medications during the procedure to make you more comfortable. These include sedatives such as Valium and narcotics such as Demerol.
In a majority of patients there will be some pelvic pain or cramping for the first 6 to 10 hours after the procedure, due to the fibroids being suddenly deprived of blood flow. This is controlled with intravenous medications as needed.
Most patients have much less discomfort by the next morning and are discharged on oral medication, such as Motrin.
